CHAPTER 23
Overhead, the sky was awash with the violet hues of the retreating night. The sun had yet to crest the top of the mighty stone palisade to the east, yet its rays pushed the darkness ever further to the west.
It was the raging fires that lightened the terrain with the unnatural glow of the day.
They had stopped their advance just outside a half mile from the edge of the woods. The sights that had been resolving with sickening clarity over the last miles were beyond appalling. Though their vision of the front of the forest in many places was blocked by the rolling hills, it appeared that fire covered the entire edge of the woods.
The flames danced high into the air as they feasted on the wood of the living forest. The Erlyn screamed in agony, begging for mercy. Her cries were desperate.
Rylâs gaze hardened as he focused on the encampment of soldiers between their position and the forest. The occasional arrow, alight with flame, streaked through the sky as they maintained a steady bombardment into the ancient woods. The laughter of the men floated in the air. Each note stung his ears. Taunting tones floated in the breeze as the army reveled in the destruction of the forest that protected their quarry.
The fires were worse than he expected. For a moment, it was a feeling of utter hopelessness that pushed him nearly to the brink of giving in. The dredges of humanity had set the woods ablaze, seeking to burn out the last semblance of resistance. A rebellion that stood against the greed that had choked the progress of the kingdom for generations.
The energy that coursed through his body as his hands closed around the Leaves paled in comparison to the inferno that raged inside him. He held the blades to each side, though the burning edges for the moment remained dormant. Ryl searched frantically for signs of the phrenics and tributes within the woods. His eyes scoured the flames for any signs of motion from the forestâs front. For those who attempted to douse the flames.
Had they abandoned the woods? The fact that the army remained hinted that their prey was still elusive. They aimed to burn them out. At least some were sure to survive, though it was impossible to gauge.
As long as there were those who still lived, nothing would stand in their path. There would be salvation.
There would be retribution.
He squeezed his eyes shut as he responded to the dramatic plea from the woods. Her agonized wail remained constant. His messages were lost to her. Clouded by the overpowering darkness and pain. Ryl felt his body quiver uncontrollably as his anger overpowered the fevered, bloodthirsty demands of the shadows that infested his body. It silenced the animated cries of the alexen, who expressed no qualms about vengeance for the atrocity playing out before them.
âI see no signs of resistance.â Paasekâs voice was pained as he gasped. The ancient woods were woven throughout the fabric of the knowledge that had survived, hidden away in the city of Vim.
